Engineer Pros

👩🏽‍💻 It’s a matter of pride for engineers of all disciplines - which types of engineers are the best?

Well, one organization thinks they have the answer.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, the best engineering job is Biomedical Engineer. So, does that mean they make the most money? No, actually.

The highest-earning engineers are actually Petroleum Engineers according to the list, with a median salary of $130,850. Not too shabby!

Obviously, the definition of “best” is subjective - not everyone would enjoy being a biomedical or petroleum engineer for various reasons.

I’m Jeff, the Engineering Career Coach at IE, and what I thought was interesting about the report was the number of engineering professions that were left off the list. Such as, software engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and aerospace engineering, to name a few. Some related jobs can be found in a separate list of Best Technology Jobs.

🔮 So what’s the lesson here? Use lists like this to understand potential earnings, job trends, and more, but in the end, the choice of the type of engineer you want to be is up to you!

No matter what, it’s always good advice to spend less than you earn and save/invest for the future!

Career tips

🔼 Upgrade your mindset for engineering career success

Our mindsets have a massive impact that can either affect our lives positively or negatively, so cultivating a strong mindset is something you want to take seriously.

Doing so will impact your relationships, promotions, career opportunities, and so much more.

📈 Researchers have identified four mindsets that we can be aware of and improve:

  • Inward – Outward | Born from research and consulting from the Arbinger Institute, this mindset is concerned with how we perceive others. Are we more inward-looking? Do we perceive others as people? Or do we see others as objects?

  • Fixed – Growth | Thanks to Carol Dweck‘s work , people are perhaps most familiar with this approach. Do you see yourself and others with fixed traits, or the ability to grow and develop over time?

  • Closed – Open | This mindset is about how receptive you are to feedback, fresh perspectives, and unexpected things.

  • Prevention – Promotion | Are you more concerned with preventing loss or failure, or trying to find advantages and opportunities?

These are just brief overviews of each mindset, but gaining awareness of each and where your current mindsets are can spur you to important change. This is because our mindsets drive our behavior, and our behavior drives our results.

If you want to make sustainable improvements in your life and career, you’ll have to address and upgrade your mindset!

Here are some simple actions you can take to improve your mindsets:

🧘🏽‍♂️ Meditate – Research has shown that the power of meditation is a way to improve your mindset. There are free apps or online videos to get you started if you need help, or just turn off everything and sit and focus on your breath or a specific intention.

📨 Get feedback from others – Talk to five or more people that know you well. These people can be family, close friends, co-workers, bosses, or others. How would they characterize your mindsets? What do they appreciate about you? How can you improve and be more helpful to them? Be open to these conversations and seek to find some blind spots that you’re unaware of right now.

📔 Journal – Journaling is one of the best tools to look back on a day or prepare for a day. It is extremely helpful to evaluate what you’ve been up to and what course of action you can take when you will be in a similar situation in the future.

These are only a few suggestions. Just identify one thing you will do differently to understand and improve your mindset. Consistency and dedication are key

🏃🏽‍♀️Changing our mindsets is something we can decide to do in a moment, but making progress takes continual effort throughout our lives.
